Before Getting a COVID-19 Test
If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you do not need to get tested right away. Exposure is considered being within 6 feet of an infected person for 15 minutes. Experts recommend exposed individuals get tested around 10 days after the exposure, unless you develop symptoms earlier. Testing too soon may result in a negative test before an exposed individual becomes sick.
It is important to quarantine for 14 days after an exposure because it can take that long to get sick. If you do not develop symptoms, testing at day 10 provides a better answer if you have become infected.
