October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to CDC, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the US. 270,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and it is the second leading cause of death in women, with 42,000 reported deaths each year. For Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black women, it is the leading cause of cancer death.
Routine health exams and self-breast exams can help detect early signs of breast cancer. Mammograms help identify cancer before noticeable symptoms occur. Early detection saves lives!
The health department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer (BCCP) screening program provides the following services to uninsured or low-income women:
- Clinical breast exams
- Mammograms
- Pap tests
- Assistance with Women’s Health Medicaid applications for women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer
- Referrals to care
