Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways characterized by episodes of reversible breathing problems due to airway restriction and obstruction. Asthma causes recurring episodes or wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. These episodes can range from mild to life-threatening.

Childhood asthma (pediatric asthma) is the most common serious chronic disease in infants and children. Approximately 126,400 (9 out of 10) Georgia children aged 0-9 have asthma. Childhood asthma can’t be cured; but with the right medications and treatment plan, symptoms can be controlled.

Programs and Services

Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale County Health Departments partnered with the Newton County School System to assist their schools in adopting a model Asthma Friendly School Policy. The health department received the funding to do the work through the Georgia Department of Public Health. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to expand access to comprehensive asthma control services through school-based strategies. These strategies are directed at reaching and engaging caregivers (schools, childcare, after school programs) and equipping them with the ability to create asthma friendly environments, recognize and respond to asthma emergencies, connect families to primary care, and understand the principles of asthma management.

An Asthma Friendly school provides a safe and healthy environment that can reduce asthma triggers and maximize the health, quality of life, and educational outcome of all children.
