Nutrition

Physical activity and nutrition work together for better health. What and how much you eat and drink, along with regular physical activity, can help you manage your weight and lower your risk of disease.

Everything you eat and drink matters. The USDA publishes nutritional guidelines for healthy eating and recommend people focus on the five food groups – fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and lean protein. By choosing a variety of foods and beverages from each food group you can build a healthy eating style.

Programs and Services

To address nutrition needs, we rely on community partnerships. In Newton County, we partner with Oxford College to raise awareness about food insecurity, as well as partnering with Newton County School’s Poverty Initiative to increase food access. In Newton, we also partner with the Housing Authority to provide nutrition education. In Rockdale, we partner with Be Bright, Eat Right!, a summer food initiative that provides sack lunches for students in need. In Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale, we partner with Open Hand Atlanta to provide cooking demonstrations and nutrition education. If you or your community group is interested in partnering with GNR to address nutrition please contact Community Health.
